Admin staff are unable to interpret results and usually they can only say whether results are ‘normal’ or whether you need to discuss it further with the doctor. Sometimes, the doctor will have issued and left a prescription, e.g. if test results show an infection
Getting your test results
If your test results show that you need more tests or treatment, we will contact you.
Once a doctor has reviewed your test results, you can view them:
How long should I wait?
Blood and Urine Tests (excluding pregnancy tests)
Many results are back within a few days for our clinicians to review. If the result creates a change in our management of your condition then we will contact you. Your results will be available to view in the NHS app.
Pregnancy Tests
These are not done routinely, as home testing kits are available from pharmacies.
X-rays
If you have been referred by the practice for an x-ray, MRI scan or ultrasound scan and have not had the results within 3 weeks, please contact the practice so we can chase the result. Sometimes more complex results may take longer as it depends on the hospital consultant interpreting your scan and writing your report.
For any investigations undertaken by the hospital (and not referred by your GP) you will need to wait for the hospital to get in touch with you regarding your result.
Cervical Screening
Results of smear tests are usually available after 6-8 weeks. A letter with the results will be posted to you, but please contact us if you have not received this after 8 weeks. We receive the results at the same time you do.
