You can treat coughs, colds, sore throat, minor cuts and grazes with items from a medical cabinet such as plasters, over the counter cold medicines and pain relief. These items are available from community pharmacy or other retail outlets.
The community pharmacist can provide guidance on minor ailments and prescription enquiries.
From 31st January 2024 a national initiative enables community pharmacists to provide treatment, including antibiotics where clinically appropriate, for 7 common conditions which would normally involve an appointment with The GP practice.
These conditions are:
- Sinusitis (aged over 12 years)
- Sore throat (aged over 5 years)
- Earache (aged 1 – 17 years)
- Infected insect bite (aged 1 years and over)
- Impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
- Shingles (aged 18 years and over)
- Urinary tract infection (Women aged 16 to 64)
